WARNING - Update BIOS prior to installing XP SP2

I hosed my laptop last night while updating to SP2. XP SP2 is very BIOS strict and if the BIOS is not current for the hardware the OS will hang on reboot.&

Worse still that this occurred on a laptop I bought in July 2004. You would think that the BIOS would be up to spec but not exactly. Somewhere between Intel, the motherboard manufacturer and the OEM, they never exactly updated the BIOS to the right spec.

I was able to restore my machine from a back-up without data loss as I wrote an image of the HD with Ghost prior to installing SP2. The problem is that SP2 is being rolled out through auto-update and the user only has to press "Install" to enter this 2 hour OS roller coaster.

Not good. I updated my BIOS and SP2 is working great, minus the hassle of applying the "Mark of the Web" when dealing with Flash and local HTML.

It might be a good idea to update your BIOS to prevent over 2 hours of mucking with XP installer restore and Ghost.

Cheers,

Ted ;)
